Name:Kitty Pryde
E-mail:wordpainter26@yahoo.com
AOL IM:AIM status toeatbrains (Add Buddy, Send Message)
Bio:

[ CHARACTER INFO ]
Birth Name: Katherine Anne Pryde
Nicknames: Kitty, Kitten (by few), Katya, Half-Pit, Shorty
Codename: Shadowcat
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Mutant Abilities: Kitty can arrange her atoms in the space between atoms of solid objects and occasionally directed-energy attacks, which allows her to pass through matter. She cannot breathe while phasing through solid objects, such as a wall or the ground, limiting the time she can continuously phase; however, if there is air for her to breathe, she can phase indefinitely. For example, if she were to stick her torso through a wall, she would be able to breathe, but not if she went underground. She has phased up to half a dozen people, and she has often phased objects and, occasionally, vehicles with her. By phasing through electrical systems (in some stories, the bio-electricity of humans), she short circuits the machine. As she phases, she impedes the flow of electrons (and thus energy).

Naturally, Kitty exists in the phased state and has to concentrate to stay solid. When her emotions strain or she loses concentration, while sleeping, for example, she phases through the floor. In her phased state, she has a high resistance to telepathy and can walk on air by “stepping” on the gaseous atoms. High-density metals, such as adamantium, or metals created specifically to have quickly moving atoms, are extremely difficult for her to phase through and cause pain if she manages to do so. Energy blasts prove to be detrimental to her phasing, causing her to lose her ability to be fully tangible in some instances; however, she can phase through lightning and lasers, for example. At this point, she has yet to develop the ability to walk on air, or pass through most high-density metals; however, as her training becomes more specialized and her confidence with her abilities grows, soon she will learn to control her mutation’s advanced aspects.
Affiliation: X-Men
[ APPEARANCE ]

Height: 5'2"
Weight: 115 lbs.
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown
Defining Traits: Kitty wears a slight smile almost constantly. In the bleak world that mutants find themselves in, she tries to find humor in it, even at the expense of herself, which means laughing at any opportunity and trying to make a joke. (Of course, that doesn't mean that she doesn't see the gravity of the situation.) She tells people to find her in pictures of the X-Men by looking for the shortest, awkwardest one in the group.
Clothing Styles/Colors: Kitty dresses in a seemingly very average way, with slightly faded jeans and a form-fitting hoodie. She wears whimsical shirts with subtle patterns and text. While the other X-Men wear black, Kitty brightens the room with lighter colors: greens, pinks, blues. Often she chooses to wear Xavier Institute shirts or those with logos of other (fictional) super heroes, such as Super-Man or the Fantastic Four. Usually, she can be found in jeans and sneakers over a dress and heels, preferring to dress casually and unassumingly; although for special occasions, she can be forced into a gown – but still, she wears flats over heels.
Other: Despite being 5'2, she appears much shorter, almost by two or three inches, mostly due to her small frame and sneakers. Usually, her hair is pulled back into a very messy ponytail, with chopped locks of hair falling around her face; when her hair is down, it falls a little past her shoulders. Her eyes are bright, but what catches most people's eyes is her smile; still, she usually pulls funny faces or a half-smile instead. Pale skin surrounded by dark hair, coupled with her tiny frame, give her the impression of being physically weak, or at least, less of a threat than the other X-Men; moreover, it gives her the impression of normality. Occasionally she can be seen with a gold Star of David necklace; she specifically remembers to wear it during important events, anything the press may attend, or around Jewish holidays. She does not like to wear it when fighting or training out of fear it may be damaged.

[ ETC ]

Personal History: A Jewish couple, Carmen and Theresa Pryde, gave Kitty a stable, loving home in Deerfield, Illinois. At a very young age, she exhibited traits of an extreme brilliance, especially in math and science. At five, she was capable of elementary calculations and higher-level thinking; at ten, she had advanced to algebra. By the time she hit puberty, she enrolled in high school-level pre-calculus with an at-home tutor, who just happened to teach at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Despite her success, she often felt isolated and ignored; the other kids were playing hopscotch and singing, while she hid in a dark room and found the value of x. Recognizing this, her mother signed her up for dance lessons, and she took to them like a bee to honey. She loved using her body to express emotions she didn’t have the capacity to understand; it was so foreign and unknown to her. After trying jazz, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary and ball-room, Kitty found herself drawn to the structure and rigidity of ballet; just like math has very specific rules one must manipulate to achieve the predicted outcome, ballet had techniques Kitty could learn to move through to express herself.

Still, she managed to find pleasure in science and math. At thirteen, she began to have headaches, especially when she concentrated. She thought it was merely from her studying too much. Shortly after her manifestation, an elderly man in a wheelchair from a school in Upstate New York was on her porch, speaking of genetics and “abilities,” which he quickly differentiated from her skill in science. Kitty Pryde, after spending a few minutes trying to understand, was hit with another headache. She went upstairs, tried to take a nap, but before she knew what was happening, she was laying in the middle of the living room. The elderly man had the answers for what had just happened and convinced her parents to let her join the school. Kitty would be taught how to control her “phasing,” as he called it. She packed her bags and left Illinois for the first time, discovering the new world of mutants. Immediately she felt alone; everyone, while generally charming and friendly, had established a clique – even a crime fighting group of friends! She made close friends, Bobby and Jubilee, who were close to her age, and when they started to fight and wear uniforms, Kitty started to feel like she belonged. Even though she missed the green river on St. Patty’s Day or the smell of her old dance studio, not to mention her parents and all of her friends back home, she can’t imagine life without the X-Men.

When she first joined the group, she tried to make friends. There were hundreds of kids running around, compared to the two or three neighbors she had back home. The school started to become the one place she actually fit in reasonably well, and she found most people actually wanted to become her friend, too. In fact, she formed friendly relationships with the staff, especially Storm and Jean, whom she considered friends and role-models. She began to see herself as a member of the X-Men rather than just a student. After Emma Frost joined the staff, Kitty immediately didn’t trust her. She thought that the older woman dressed too provocatively, probably controlled Xavier’s mind to let her into the place, and, moreover, is the enemy, plain and simple. When Kitty thinks about evil, Emma’s is the face she sees. Sure, she believes that people can change, but Emma hasn’t changed at all. Instead of letting it slide, like most of the staff and students, Kitty acts out in class, watches her like a hawk, and can hardly keep her tongue in check. Her actions have fueled animosity in the classroom, strained her relationships with the other X-Men, but Kitty isn’t about to allow this woman to put her friends at risk. Still, Emma joining the X-Men has blurred the line of good versus evil for Kitty; if Xavier thinks that Frost is moral, or at least capable of being moral, how can she trust him? Scott, Storm and Jean, all of whom she trust and respect, allow Emma to teach the students and act as a role-model; how is that not an outrage? The world, it seems, is not as black and white as she thought it was.

Having been at the school for a few years, Kitty had formed strong enough relationships with the X-Men to not only be excited when they went on missions, but to be downright worried. All of the missions were the same: the other students would crowd around the television, flipping through news stations to find one reporting on the X-Men or even just the cause. She would leave her homework on the table and join the group, almost terrified that something would go wrong, that they wouldn't save everyone, and that they wouldn't even come back at all - and in more than one case, she was right. Even after attacks on the mansion, her friends leaving the group, and the death of her mentors, she still felt strongly the cause was worth fighting for. In her first real mission early in 2007, she suited up with Bobby and Colossus to defend Alcatraz from the Brotherhood attack, saving Leech herself. She hadn't even considered taking the cure for a millisecond, and although she tried to understand why anyone would, she just didn't.
Extra: When phasing, Kitty's mind is extremely difficult to find. If heard, thoughts would be fleeting, short bursts of words or images, and lengthy mind control may be impossible.

In comic history, it seems like Kitty was mentally controlled more often than normal. When not phasing, she is remarkably open and prone to subconsciously broadcasting her thoughts. Other than the basic telepathic resistance Xavier teaches to his students, Kitty would be an easy target. It would probably be easier to take over her mind than actually fight her.
